Astro Oscar Preview: Best Actress

It’s time for big girls to take a spin on the Oscar carousel, and this ride will be a battle. Which actress will claw her way to the top?

Sandra Bullock (Leo) “The Blind Side”
Why she’ll triumph: Without a doubt, Leo Bullock earned her fur this year by becoming the most bankable actor of 2010 (male or female). She also won three major wards she was nominated for (including the SAG and the Golden Globe) thus becoming the most unlikely frontrunner of the year. This lioness is itching for her coronation.
Why she won’t: But can a so-so Southern accent and blonde bleach really win you an Oscar? Especially when Meryl Streep was denied for like a quarter of the century?

Helen Mirren (Leo) “The Last Station”
Why she’ll triumph: Lionesses like Mirren have won 5 out of 11 last times in this category. It’s a juicy, masterful, and a memorable role at Leo Tolstoy’s intriguing wife.
Why she won’t: Her last statue (won in 2007) is not rotting just yet. The academy already paid their Mirren dues.

Carey Mulligan (Gemini) “An Education”
Why she’ll triumph: The Academy loved the film and nominated it for Best Picture. Its breakout Gemini star gave a star making performance that drew comparisons with none other than Audrey Hepburn. Why not reward her early in what looks to be like a lengthy career?
Why she won’t: She did win a BAFTA, but was that just a British bluff? Mulligan turned off some voters by not being as appealing and bubbly as some expected her to be in real life. This is just not her time.

Gabourney Sidibe (Taurus) “ Precious”
Why she’ll triumph: Sidibe has the most demanding role in the lot and her illiterate character is virtually opposite of actresses’ real life charms. It was an impacting, deeply felt performance that might send shockwaves through the world on Oscar night.
Why she won’t: Taurus women haven’t won in the lead (as opposed to supporting) since 1974. Her competition is simply too stiff this year and Precious will undoubtedly be rewarded with Mo’Nique’s win.

Meryl Streep (Cancer) “Julie & Julia”
Why she’ll triumph: This poor woman got dressed up over and over since 1983 on Oscar night…only to lose 13 times. After winning a Globe and starring in two more hits this year, she’s way overdue. Her loss to Leo Bullock (who’s also favored to win a Razzie this year) might be too painful to bare. It’s easy, right? Oscar is hers.
Why she won’t: But Hollywood doesn’t often follow logic. It’s widely believed that this is Bullock’s year and Streep will just have to fake her applause on Sunday and hope that she competes with robots or five-year olds next year.

Astro Prediction: Bullock wins the gold in an appoprietly Leo gold dress, while Streep sucks up her pride and tells reporters that she’s “just thrilled for Sandra”.

Bette Davis: Rams Never Lose!

Bette Davis Aries

Aries Bette Davis (born April 5, 1908) was not the one who enjoyed being second at anything. At the time, she was the most nominated actress of all time (until she was surpassed by Taurus Katharine Hepburn, who herself was later bested by Cancer Meryl Streep), but she only had a couple of Oscars on her mantle. When Hepburn became the first thespian to win three in 1968 while tying Barbra Streisand, Davis had this to say:

I wanted to be the first to win three Oscars, but Miss Hepburn has done it. Actually it hasn’t been done. Miss Hepburn only won half an Oscar. If they’d given me half an Oscar I would have thrown it back in their faces. You see, I’m an Aries. I never lose.

Astro Oscar Preview: Best Actress

Oscars: Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet

Anne Hathaway (Scorpio), Rachel Getting Married
Why she’ll triumph: In the last ten years, Academy voters awarded the statue almost exclusively to the most appealing young actress in the group, who basically uglified herself for the role. Scorpio Hathaway plays a recovering addict and fits the description perfectly.
Why she won’t: It’s a competitive year and not too many voters appreciated her film about semi-depressed family relationships.

Angelina Jolie (Gemini), Changeling
Why she’ll triumph: If Oscars want to make a hugely publicized win possible, they’ll check off Jolie’s name in a hurry.
Why she won’t: Jolie already has a statue (even if she doesn’t know where it is) and her only line in the movie seemed to be “I want my son back!” even though she was great while delivering it.

Melissa Leo (Virgo), Frozen River
Why she’ll triumph: This Virgo could be the night’s big shocker. The hard-working actress gave a tender performance in a great indie and if enough academy members popped in those DVD’s, she’s definitely in the running.
Why she won’t: Leo does not only have to compete against four other actresses, but also versus millions of dollars invested in their campaigns.

Meryl Streep (Cancer), Doubt
Why she’ll triumph: She’s a legend. But this Cancer hasn’t won an Oscar in more than a quarter of a century and she’s the biggest loser in the event’s history. She’s at her best in Doubt and it’s a movie that academy voters seemed to support.
Why she won’t: This may very be Winslet’s year and even a living icon might not be able to stop her.

Kate Winslet (Libra), The Reader
Why she’ll triumph: This Libra gave Oscars every cliché that they craved in The Reader. She has an accent, she got naked, she’s unpleasant and she wants her first Oscar. Real badly. She won for this role at practically every shindig and Time magazine cover can only solidify her top pony status.
Why she won’t: Until four weeks ago, Winslet was in the supporting category for the film. And most of her speeches seemed needy and desperate.

Astro Prediction: Libra Winslet should triumph easily, but Cancer Streep will most certainly have her supporters.
