Now that you actually have time to catch up with some of most acclaimed films of the year, you can finally familiarize yourselves with the works of some of the most recently hyped directors as well. Although Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 22, Best Director category has four clear frontrunners: Virgo David Fincher (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button), two Leos in Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), and Libra Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). Interestingly, this year’s derby is quite consistent with historical statistics as well. Virgos and Leos boast the most prominent directors, but we’ve decided to compile all the great masters by signs and their signature characteristics. Of course you might be a Pisces for example but almost always enjoy Libra movies. So take note of your cinematic astrological taste and pay close attention next time you go to the movies.
Aries
The genius masterminds. They know what they want from an actor and they’ll do anything to get it. Tarantino lovingly tortured Uma Thurman on the set of Kill Bill, while Lean convinced Peter O’Toole to undergo a rhinoplasty for The Lawrence of Arabia.
Taurus
The rule-breakers. These creative heads love doing the seemingly impossible. Wells and Clooney have succeeded in acting, directing, producing, and re-writing scripts at the same time. Lucas created an empire by being stubborn, and Copolla and Campion are arguably two of the best female directors in history.
Gemini
The fast thinkers. They don’t care about that annoying bird sound during the first take of scene 24 because they’re already shooting scene 25. These masters like Eastwood know how to make sound decisions and ultimately save money and earn respect.
Cancer
The character champions. These gentle geniuses like Bergman, Lumet, and Wilder love to gift their actors with multi-layered emotional baggage. Their characters can cry, laugh, thrive, and fail within a span of five minutes. They often love to write their own material and Crowe was so fond of late Wilder, he gave him a shout out during his Oscar speech for Almost Famous.
Leo
The gods of epic and scary. If you want to make a blockbuster that makes a billion (Cameron with Titanic, DeMille with The Ten Commandments, Nolan with The Dark Night) hire a Leo. If you want to scare people for the next ten decades (Hitchcock for everything, Shyamalan with The Sixth Sense, Craven with Scream), definitely hire a lion as well.
Virgo
The painstaking perfectionists. It might take them seven to ten years to conceive a perfect film (Stone, Luhrmann, Burton), but once they do, the results can be astonishing. The costumes will be extraordinary, the visual effects spectacular, and often these leaders actually love sitting down with producers to outline the budget progress reports.
Libra
The wild cards. Making fast and sound decisions is not this sign’s forte, but intellectual creativity is. Libra directors can break the rules (Penn with Bonnie and Clyde) and make you want to sing (Marshall with Chicago). The key to their success is really quietly collecting their amazing thoughts in their trailer…alone.
Scorpio
The visual virtuosos. Scorpios love to shock, and in film nothing speaks louder than a masterfully conceived action scene or beautifully executed cinematography. These directors can tell a story with few words. Think of Scorsese’s The Raging Bull, Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, or Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. And this year, Zhang captured the imaginations of billions by being a passionate brain behind the Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies.
Sagittarius
The modern fable storytellers. For Sag film leaders, every film could be broken down into a clear and comprehensive story with a definite beginning, middle, and end. Whether it’s emotional (Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan), mad (Jonze’s Being John Malkovich), or romantic (Allen’s Annie Hall) are all phenomenal and addictively engaging tales.
Capricorn
The history buffs. For Capricorns, great movies are really all about significant historical facts or political context like Curtiz’ Casablanca, Gibson’s Braveheart, and Soderbergh’s Traffic. They love to research, make big statements, and appreciate clever societal commentary.
Aquarius
The trendsetting visionaries. Often Aquarius directors make films that are years ahead of their time. Think of Eisenstein’s Battleship Potempkin, Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, and nearly all of Fellini’s masterpieces. These creators see fantasy in virtually everything and make all of their films not only comprehensive character studies but also beautiful visual artworks.
Pisces
The ensemble maestros. These likable directors love to create a feeling of a big family on a set often resulting in very productive actor ensemble work, like Haggis’ Crash, Altman’s Short Cuts, or Howard’s Apollo 13. They’re virtually everyone’s best friend for the duration of filming and intuitively know what needs to be done at all times.

I’ve studied the charts of many directors, and frankly I think natal aspects describe a filmmaker’s work much more accurately than his or her Sun sign.

Agreed. Particularly, their moon sign. Quentin’s moon is in Taurus. Michel Gondry’s is in Scorpio Akira Kurosawa’s birthday is the Pisces/Aries cusp and both he and David Lynch have their moon in Virgo.
Since the moon represents their emotional, private side and that sort of personality is usually expressed in a person’s art, it only makes sense to marry their sun and moon signs together to get an idea of what kind of film they would make. I find the moon sign tells me much more about a person than their sun sign.

Oh and Tim Burton’s moon sign is in Scorpio. I find the most off-beat, experimental, dark artists usually have a water sign in their chart: Pisces (dreamy, romantic, poetic), Scorpio (intense, sexual, magenetic) or Cancer (emotional, imaginative, intuitive). And Taurus and Libra are two of the most romantic signs out there and Aquarius is, well damn, there’s a song about them, that’s self-explanatory.

Sure! Do you have any particular director or a sign in mind? As you can see, there are quite a few to choose from.
